You've got questions about drywall texture, and believe me, I've heard 'em all. As a contractor working in South Jordan for years, people often ask me about the best texture, how long it takes, and what to do when things go sideways. So, I figured, why not just lay it all out for you? This is straight from my own experience.

What's the most popular drywall texture right now?

Hands down, it's still knockdown. It's been the reigning champ for a while, and there's a good reason for that. It gives you this subtle, slightly rustic vibe without looking too busy. We apply it as a wet spray, then a wide knife or trowel gently 'knocks down' the peaks, leaving a flatter, kind of irregular pattern. It's fantastic for hiding minor imperfections, which is a huge plus, especially in older homes or if you've done some DIY repairs, you know?

Orange peel is another strong contender, especially if you're aiming for a more contemporary or understated look. It's a finer, less pronounced texture, truly like, well, an orange peel. We spray it on and just leave it; no knocking down involved. It's super popular in newer builds around places like Daybreak because it just looks so clean and modern.

How long does it take to texture a room?

That's a tough one to give you an exact answer without actually seeing the room, but I can give you a pretty good ballpark. For an average-sized room, let's say 12x12 feet, if the drywall is already hung and finished (taped, mudded, sanded), the actual texturing usually only takes a few hours. That's just the application time, mind you. However, you absolutely have to factor in drying time. Depending on the texture type, the humidity levels in your home (which can swing wildly here in Utah, especially with our dry summers and snowy winters), and how much ventilation you have, it can take anywhere from 12 to 24 hours for it to fully dry. You can't even think about priming or painting until then. So, while the active work is quick, the whole process from start to paint-ready might easily span a couple of days.

Can I texture over old wallpaper or painted walls?

Look, technically you can, but it's rarely a good idea, and I almost never recommend it. Texturing over wallpaper? That's a recipe for disaster. The moisture from the texture material can reactivate the wallpaper paste, causing it to bubble, peel, or even tear. Then your texture job is ruined. You'll just end up with a bigger mess than you started with.

Texturing over painted walls is a little better, but still not ideal. The texture really needs a good surface to stick to. If your paint is glossy, dirty, or flaking, the texture won't adhere properly and could peel off later. At the very least, you'd need to thoroughly clean, degrease, and lightly sand the walls to give the texture some grip. But honestly, for the best, most durable result, you want to scrape off old wallpaper and prime any painted surfaces with a quality drywall primer first. It's more work upfront, yes, but it saves you so many headaches down the line.

What's the difference between hand texture and spray texture?

This is a big one. Spray texture, like orange peel or knockdown, uses a specialized sprayer to apply the material. It's generally faster, more uniform, and usually what you see in most modern homes. It's great for covering large areas efficiently.

Hand texture, on the other hand, we apply by hand using tools like trowels, sponges, or brushes. Think skip trowel, Santa Fe, or even some of the more artistic, custom finishes. It's more labor-intensive, often takes longer, and creates a unique, less uniform, and often more pronounced pattern. It can really add a lot of character and a custom feel to a room. You'll often spot hand textures in older, custom homes or in specific architectural styles. It's a skill that takes years to master, and a good hand texture job truly stands out.

My texture is damaged. Can it be matched?

Matching existing texture is one of the trickiest parts of drywall repair, especially with older or custom textures. It's not impossible, but it takes a lot of skill and a good eye. For common textures like orange peel or knockdown, a skilled technician from Western Drywall Company can usually get a very close match. We've got the right equipment and experience to blend it in so it's barely noticeable once painted.

For older or more unique hand textures, it's a bit more of an art form. We might need to try a few different techniques and tools to replicate the pattern. Sometimes, even with our best efforts, there might be a slight difference, but a good painter can often minimize that with careful priming and painting. The goal is always to make the repair disappear, and most of the time, we can get it pretty darn close.

How do I choose the right texture for my home?

Choosing the right texture really comes down to a few things: your home's style, your personal preference, and how much light the room gets. If you've got a modern home, a finer orange peel or a subtle knockdown usually works well. For a more rustic or traditional look, a heavier knockdown or even a hand-applied skip trowel can be beautiful.

Consider the light, too. In a room with a lot of natural light, a heavier texture can create interesting shadows and depth. In a darker room, though, a lighter texture might make the space feel a bit brighter and less busy. Think about what you want the room to feel like. Do you want it to be sleek and contemporary, or warm and inviting? Don't be afraid to look at examples online or even ask us to show you some samples. We're happy to walk you through the options and help you pick something you'll love for years to come.
